To ensure our wider whānau are well informed, this page brings together key information about the Wayby Valley Landfill — what has happened so far, where things currently stand, and what lies ahead.

Wayby Valley Landfill

The kaupapa

The proposal to create a large-scale landfill in Wayby Valley – that sits within the rohe of Ngāti Manuhiri – has been under legal and environmental challenge for several years. Our three entities:

  • Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua

  • Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust

  • Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara Development Trust

have worked collectively to oppose the resource consent for the landfill over the past six years.

In May 2025, we made the difficult decision to withdraw opposition from the legal process.

We did not reach this decision lightly. It came after weighing up:

  • The high and ongoing legal costs we would continue to face – especially if we lost

  • The limited influence remaining through litigation

Continuing the kōrero

We will be holding wānanga across the rohe, to give space to continue the kōrero, strengthen our collective approach, and ensure whānau voice guides our next steps.

The first wānanga was held at Te Aroha Pā Marae on Saturday 17 May 2025, please see links to the presentations below. Upcoming hui dates will be shared via the pānui, social media and this website.
