Kotahitanga
Kotahitanga is the collective resilience, emergency management and marae development function of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua, working alongside our marae, hapū, whānau and partners to strengthen preparedness, response, recovery and long-term community wellbeing across our rohe.
Grounded in the values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and kotahitanga, we support communities to build resilience before emergencies occur and to respond effectively when they do. Our work includes emergency planning, capability development, training and exercises, risk reduction initiatives, relationship building, and coordination during significant events.
Manaaki Marae
Through our Manaaki Marae team, we work in partnership with marae to support their development and sustainability. This includes strategic planning, infrastructure and capital projects, funding opportunities, governance support, resilience initiatives, and programmes that strengthen marae capability and ensure these important community assets continue to thrive for future generations.
By bringing people, knowledge and resources together, Kotahitanga helps ensure that Ngāti Whātua communities and marae are connected, informed and equipped to support one another, while building stronger, more resilient communities across our rohe.
Kia Tau te Wai, Kia Tau te Ora - 2026
This important kaupapa at Te Houhanga a Rongo Marae will reduce flood duration and severit.
Following the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, this mahi is focused on strengthening site safety and ensuring the marae can continue to serve its people and whenua for generations to come.
Te Houhanga a Rongo Marae is a vital hub for community wellbeing, refuge, and resilience, especially as climate events become more frequent.
Key works completed include:
Rehabilitation of ageing culverts and floodgates
Repairs to the stop bank
Installation of new piped and open drainage systems
Safety fencing and improved access
Upgrades to road reticulation and stormwater infrastructure
Whātua Wai Māori - 2026
This kaupapa is focused on upgrading drinking water infrastructure across 15 marae in our rohe
This mahi supports the marae to maintain safe and reliable water infrastructure capable of meeting both everyday needs and peak demand during events or emergencies, helping to protect the health and wellbeing of haukāinga and manuhiri.
Each upgrade includes:
Waterproof housing and drainage works
Filtration and UV units for safe drinking water
