Ngati Whatua Hapu Celebrates Education Successes

Ngati Whatua o Orakei has celebrated the increasing number of its rangatahi going through tertiary education.

The Trust Board held its sixth annual graduate celebration on November 26.

Spokesperson Piripi Davis says the hapu launched an education strategy a decade ago, and it's now paying off.

“Maybe 15 years ago only two people from our iwi here went all the way through to the seventh form, only two. We've probably got about 30 or 40 now,” he says.

Mr Davis says many of the youngsters are turning their interest in sport into study in subjects like sport management and science that can lead to careers.
